Empower Island Education

A Parent-Led Association dedicated to Restoring Trust, Improving Education, and Building a Stronger Future for All Mercer Island Students.

Parents for Mercer Island is a new, nonpartisan, parent-led organization committed to restoring academic excellence, financial responsibility, and community trust in our public schools. Formed in response to declining enrollment, weakened academic outcomes, and growing concerns over district leadership and fiscal mismanagement, we advocate for a student-centered, transparent, and accountable approach to education.

We are a registered 501(c)(4) nonprofit and hope many, many parents will join us. We represent families from all backgrounds—public school, private school, and homeschool—and believe all voices deserve to be heard. Our priorities include modernizing curriculum, improving student safety, aligning spending with enrollment trends, and protecting the programs that make Mercer Island schools exceptional.

Parents for Mercer Island is ready to fund initiatives, programs, and political activities from day one. We are united by one mission: to ensure every Mercer Island child has access to a world-class education that reflects the values of our community.

The Owl’s Symbolism

Parents of Mercer Island chose the owl as our symbol to reflect our commitment to wisdom, clarity, and education—values embodied by the goddess Athena. In Greek mythology, Athena’s owl symbolizes insight, reason, and the ability to see through darkness—qualities we believe are essential for guiding our schools through today’s challenges. Just as the owl watches over with vigilance, we aim to protect the future of education on Mercer Island with thoughtful leadership, informed advocacy, and a steadfast focus on what matters most: our children’s learning and well-being.

The owl also represents intellectual curiosity, ethical civic leadership, and discernment in the face of complexity—core traits of a strong educational system. As a symbol of empowerment through knowledge, especially for future generations, the owl reminds us that the path to a better school system begins with wisdom, inclusion, and the courage to see clearly—even in the dark.
